Why May Is the Unrivaled Month for Southern Spain

Traveling in Andalusia during July or August is an exercise in endurance. Temperatures regularly breach 42°C (108°F) in the Guadalquivir valley, shuttering shops from 1:00 PM to 6:00 PM and making sightseeing grueling. In May, by contrast, the average high in Seville and Córdoba is a glorious 24°C (75°F) with cool evening breezes dipping to 13°C.

The citrus trees lining the plazas of Seville, Jerez, and Granada remain laden with sweet-smelling orange blossoms (azahar). Furthermore, patio gardens in Córdoba are at peak flowering during the famed Fiesta de los Patios, held annually in the first two weeks of May.

Field Tip: The Córdoba Patios Window

During the first two weeks of May, residents of the San Basilio and Santa Marina quarters open their private courtyard gardens to the public free of charge. Visit between 6:00 PM and 8:30 PM for warm evening light without tour bus queues.

Curated 10-Day May Route Outline

Days 1–3: Seville (The Moorish Heart)

Base yourself in the historic Barrio de Santa Cruz. Dedicate morning hours to the Royal Alcázar and Seville Cathedral before lingering over chilled salmorejo and dry manzanilla sherry in Plaza de los Venerables. In May, evening flamenco shows at Casa de la Memoria are atmospheric and comfortable in ambient night air.

Days 4–5: Ronda and the White Hilltop Towns (Pueblos Blancos)

Rent a car and drive through the Sierra de Grazalema Natural Park. May offers exceptional road conditions and vibrant green meadows filled with purple bugloss and yellow lupines. Stay at a restored cortijo in Ronda overlooking the Puente Nuevo gorge.

Days 6–8: The Portuguese Algarve (Tavira & Sagres)

Cross the Guadiana International Bridge into Portugal. The Eastern Algarve around Tavira is calm and authentic in May. Take water taxis to Ilha de Tavira for quiet Atlantic beaches, and sample fresh grilled sardines and cataplana seafood stew.

Days 9–10: Coastal Cliffs of Ponta da Piedade & Lagos

End the journey exploring the sandstone sea arches of Lagos. Sea kayak tours operate smoothly in May with calm morning tides and crystal-clear turquoise waters.
